It was an hour before dropping and I had to stomp three cliffs and a hip jump before calling it a day. I reminded myself it’s just another day riding. It just happens to be a day filled with pros, cameras and huge cliffs.

The North Face Masters started five years ago to allow the sport of big mountain riding a wider audience with a spectator-friendly vibe, while also allowing riders the ability to free-ride the mountain as snowboarders always have.

Back in February, I returned from a disappointing showing at The North Face Masters at Crystal Mountain. Fortunately I get another crack at the the competition in my home state. The comp starts tomorrow at Snowbird, can't wait.

After completing the backcountry introductory class in February, I was waiting for the opportunity to get out into the great wide-open and ride some fresh lines. With the perfect storm of March 17 – 19, Brighton Ski Resort received 35” of new snow prompting shredders to get out and ski some amazing, fluffy face shots.

And since it is a leap year we found ourselves leaping into chutes and off cliffs to our delight in the 16” total of new that had come in the last 48 hours. Book you flight now and call in sick, because Utah is getting ILL!

Sure Utah's got the POW, but don't miss the Canis Lupus Banked Slalom or the King of the Wasatch this weekend only.

"The most important thing to dropping cliffs is knowing that the snow is good. It needs to be soft and the cliff should have a steep landing with no rocks in it. Jumping a big cliff with a flat landing means that you're most likely going to feel some pain and you're an idiot. You don't need much speed for most cliffs, so make sure you don't overshoot it. Landing is the most difficult part, and I mostly ride pow boards with a short tail so I can have my body weight centered almost forward. Lastly, don't lean back."

The old adage, ‘when it rains it pours’ can be flipped when it snows in Utah to read, ‘when it snows it dumps!’ With 4’ of accumulation in five days and another 12” – 14” on the way tonight, January is shaping up to be a record-breaking month in snow totals. The “million dollar storm” as it’s been referred to hit late Wednesday and will continue with a series of storms until next weekend.

Cabin fever is defined by “a state characterized by anxiety, restlessness, and boredom, arising from a prolonged stay in a remote or confined place.” Although our backyard of the Wasatch Front is a little bigger than a confined place, there were stress signs clearly visible in the faces of those on the mountains for the last month.
