The mountain where I rode the majority of my ten or so days before moving to Utah covered a whopping 240 acres and offered an exhilarating 1,041 vertical feet on the off-chance there was enough snow for a top-to-bottom run. Unfortunately, I never made it on a day where the full extent of their terrain was open so I stuck to the runs at mid-mountain and below.
Ignorance is bliss, though, and I had no idea what I was missing out on until my first full season in Utah. My first ride up Needles Gondola at Snowbasin was 12 minutes of mounting awe and excitement; my head swiveled back and forth as I tried to simultaneously take in the enormity of the peaks the gondola cabin headed toward and the breathtaking views of the base area and beyond that expanded out behind us.
The immensity of Utah’s ski resorts can feel daunting especially to those more familiar with smaller family-owned ski hills. I had no idea where to start when I arrived and felt intimidated by the easiest blue runs that effortlessly dwarfed the black diamonds at my old mountain. However, skiing and riding in Utah is far more approachable than it might appear, even if you circle “Type I skier” when filling out your form in the rental shop.
In this beginner’s guide to skiing in Utah, I’m going to walk you through some of Utah’s best beginner-friendly resorts, offer tips for a successful day and share why Utah is still an incredible starting point for your skiing journey.
Getting Started: Utah’s Best Resorts for Beginners
If you’re starting your ski adventure in Utah or are a newbie planning to spend some vacation time here this winter, you can choose from plenty of mountains that offer excellent terrain for beginners. Whether you prioritize affordability, uncrowded trails or breathtaking scenery, you are guaranteed to find a resort that’s right for you.
Powder Mountain
Known for being one of the largest ski resorts in the country, Powder Mountain is also a surprisingly great place for beginners. Runs like Amy’s 3 Mile, Mushroom Valley and East 40 are some of the many low-angle options where you can practice without pressure. Plus, Powder Mountain’s efforts to keep trails uncrowded means you’ll have plenty of space to learn at your own pace.
Deer Valley Resort
With an emphasis and insistence on luxury and impeccable service, Deer Valley Resort is an excellent choice for beginners looking for a high-end experience. The resort is also renowned for its award-winning grooming and dedication to having one of the best ski schools in the state which helps even the most nervous skiers feel at ease.
Park City Mountain Resort
Park City Mountain Resort is another contender on the list of the country’s largest ski resorts which means it also offers something for everyone, beginners very much included. Dedicated areas like the aptly named First Time Lift are perfect for building confidence before moving onto terrain further up the mountain, such as Homerun and Claimjumper. Park City also has a robust ski school where you can refresh and fine-tune your basics or take the next step to improve your skiing.
Brighton
Brighton is a local favorite for families and budget-conscious skiers. The resort offers affordable lift tickets as well as regular deals on packages which makes it an easy choice for those hoping to maximize their riding while minimizing the cost. Brighton’s terrain is also incredibly welcoming with plenty of green runs to help beginners find their footing. Give learning under the moon a try with their evening lessons!
Solitude Mountain Resort
True to its name, Solitude Mountain Resort provides a peaceful experience perfect for learning. Beginners who are new to skiing in Utah will find that Solitude has plenty of manageable slopes to focus on refining skills and building confidence. For those ready to take a step forward, the mountain also offers accessible intermediate runs that provide just the right amount of challenge to keep the day exciting.
Nordic Valley
Small but mighty, Nordic Valley to the north is an ideal spot ideal for anyone starting their skiing journey. Its affordable price tag and friendly, local vibe make it perfect for families or individuals who want to test the waters. Nordic Valley’s night skiing also sets it apart; gliding down gentle slopes under twinkling lights and a starry sky is a magical experience, even for those still mastering the basics.
