Dog-Friendly Nordic Skiing in Utah

Utah’s Greatest Snow on Earth® isn’t just for human alpine skiers -- it can be shared with man's best friend! Nordic (cross-country) skiing allows you and your dog to play in the snow together and can double as a fun workout for you and your four-legged companions. However, just like at ski resorts, dog access on Nordic trails varies widely depending on location and regulations. (For more information on cross-country skiing in general reference this blog).

This guide outlines the best dog-friendly Nordic ski areas in Utah, highlights trails where dogs are prohibited, and provides tips for a safe and fur-tastic day.

Dog-Friendly Nordic Ski Areas in Utah

Round Valley – Park City, Utah

Round Valley is a locals favorite for dog-friendly activities. The area offers over 25 miles of groomed trails that welcome both skiers and their pups. Dogs can run off-leash in designated areas and the wide open rolling hills make this a paradise for your four-legged friend.

  • Dog Rules: Off-leash allowed in specific zones; always pick up after your dog.

  • Trail Difficulty: Suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers, great variable terrain with a mix of both uphills and downhill sections.

Millcreek Canyon – Salt Lake City, Utah

Millcreek Canyon is not part of the Salt Lake City watershed making it one of the few canyons in the Salt Lake Valley that welcomes dogs year-round. In winter, the gate closes about halfway up the canyon transforming the road into a snowy wonderland for snowshoeing, fat biking, ski touring and cross-country skiing.

  • Dog Rules: Dogs are allowed off-leash on odd-numbered days and must be leashed on even-numbered days. Dogs must remain on leash in parking areas and trailheads.

  • Trail Difficulty: Moderate out and back, with some steep sections.

Ogden Nordic – Eden, UT

Ogden Nordic offers an idyllic setting for dog-friendly Nordic skiing, with groomed trails meandering through forests and open meadows.

Nordic Ski Areas That Do Not Allow Dogs

Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon Nordic Trails

Trails in these canyons are off-limits to dogs due to watershed protection regulations. This includes popular areas like Solitude Nordic Center and the groomed track near Alta.

  • Why no dogs? Protecting the watershed ensures clean drinking water for Salt Lake Valley residents. Dog waste and erosion can introduce harmful contaminants into the water supply. To learn more, read about the watershed ban here.

Mountain Dell Golf Course Nordic Trails – Parley’s Canyon, UT

This ski area near Parley’s Canyon also prohibits dogs to safeguard its proximity to Salt Lake’s watershed.

Utah Olympic Park – Park City, UT

This groomed ski area does not allow dogs on the groomed trails during the winter months.

White Pine Nordic Center – Park City, UT

This private ski area in Park City does not allow dogs on the trails.

Soldier Hollow Nordic Center – Midway, UT

While Soldier Hollow is known for hosting professional Nordic skiing events such as the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and the upcoming 2034 Winter Olympic Games, it does not allow dogs.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Dog-Friendly Nordic Ski Adventure

Know the Rules

Check the trail’s website or contact local organizations to confirm current dog policies.

Prepare Your Dog for Winter Conditions

Bring booties to protect your dog’s paws from ice and snow. Dress short-coated dogs in a warm jacket or vest. Be mindful that skis with edges can cut dogs easily, keep dogs away from yourself and others with ski edges.

What to Pack

Bring waste bags, a collapsible water bowl, snacks, and a leash. Even on off-leash trails, having a leash can come in handy.

Start Slow

If your dog is new to Nordic skiing, begin on flat, beginner trails to help them adjust to running alongside skis.

Be Mindful of Other Skiers

Keep your dog under control and yield to other trail users to ensure everyone has a good experience.

Respect the Environment

Always clean up after your dog and leave no trace.

Nordic skiing with your dog is an amazing way to exercise, bond, and experience Utah’s winter activities with your most loyal companion. From Round Valley’s undulating hills to the quiet trails of Ogden Nordic Center, there’s a dog-friendly option for every skier. With a little planning and respect for trail regulations, you and your pup can make unforgettable memories in the snow.
